First launched in 1797, the USS Constitution was personally named by Gen. George Washington, in an era when other countries' warships were named for royalty or nobility; to emphasize to the world that our reverence and allegiance was to the Constitution only, not a monarchy. The victor of every naval engagement she fought (over 40 battles) the Constitution received her nickname during the War of 1812 when a sailor saw a British cannonball bounce off her side and declared "Her sides are made of iron!" Converted to a training ship during the US Civil War, and refitted as a museum and training facility in 1900, the USS Constitution is the oldest continuously commissioned military ship in the world. |
